Candida. An Overview

Candida, a yeast organism – is normally found on skin, in the mouth, gut, and other mucus membranes. It causes infection when our natural resistance to its overgrowth is reduced. Most Candida infections are limited to mucus membranes. Infections are sometimes referred to as Thrush, Oral thrush, Yeast Infection , Fungal infection – but the symptoms could be as simple as “brain fog” or simply feeling lethargic ( see below for list of common symptoms ).

Disseminated infection by Candida of internal organs can occur in severely immunocompromised patients, such as those with cancer, serious burns, or AIDS. This is a much more serious condition than superficial Candida infection.

It is estimated that 70 percent of people have Candida Overgrowth in their intestines, mouths or on their skin…

Candida Symptoms

Hey – now let’s get something straight first, ALL of these symptoms are not ALWAYS attributed to a localised or systemic fungal infection – and sometimes the underlying cause is a result of Leaky Gut syndrome or something more serious. But Candida imbalances tend to put a big load on the immune system and self-perpetuates a “downward spiral”. Getting Yeast Imbalances under control can make a huge difference on your journey back to health.

…In most cases, the organism is commensal — it does not harm people, even though it depends upon them for food. However, colonies of Candida sometimes grow too large, as happens in the case of yeast infections. The oral form of Candida infection, known as thrush, is a common problem for infants and Adults alike. We have found that a surprisingly large proportion of people around the world suffer from a number of these symptoms simultaneously or periodically over a period of time and who may never find out what the cause is. Those that do eventually find out (often by chance or through coming across a book or website like this), have often lived for years, even decades feeling really awful a large amount of the time. Apart from feeling physically ill and lifeless they often also suffer from the psychological pressure of constantly wondering what on earth is wrong with them in light of the fact that the Doctors keep telling them that they “test out okay” and eventually recommend them to a psychotherapist! Does this sound familiar?

Candida may be affecting millions of people in a very dramatic way

When present in your body in an out-of-balance state it has the potential to cause any number of the above symptoms. Obviously, not everyone with fatigue, mood swings, central nervous system problems, or headaches etc suffers from Candida infection, but it is of significant prevalence that it is well worth examining in people who have reoccurring intractable problems of this type.

Candida Cause: What causes Candida imbalance?

The organism ( Candida ) may become pathogenic ( capable of causing disease ) when the systems’ ability to contain this organism proves ineffective and proliferation of the yeast results in overgrowth. This can happen internally and externally on the skin and in or around the oral and vaginal cavities. Most of the medical information pertaining to Candidiasis would appear to relate to external forms of Candida infection. We believe, as do many other Health Practitioners, that internal Candida infection is very common, often undiagnosed, and quite possibly the cause of many external infectious Candida conditions, along with a wide range of other chronic, acute, and degenerative disorders.

There are many factors which may contribute singly or jointly to the overgrowth of Candida.

Candida Cure? The solution to Candida overgrowth? Diets?

Most Candida health protocols will generally assert that it will take months of serious dieting, and total elimination of any sugar, honey, fruit juices and even fruit, grains and most carbohydrates. Candida , in it’s correct form is actually beneficial to us – so there is no such thing as being completely “rid of Candida” or any “miracle “cure” – it’s all about getting Yeast back in balance!

Common Types of Treatments..

Probiotics

Probiotics or friendly bacteria are often taken as part of a candida program to re-balance the natural flora in the large intestines. While this is an important part of the re-balancing process, it helps to understand the different types of probiotic supplements available to ensure you choose the right one at the right time.

Common probiotic supplements contain commonly recognised friendly bacteria that are usually very sensitive to temperatures and to the acidic conditions of the stomach environment. They are usually stored in the fridge and every capsule contains billions of colony forming units (CFU’s) of each bacteria to ensure that a significant amount make it to the bowel intact. These supplements usually focus on a few strains of good bacteria from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium families. They are beneficial for restoring balance to the intestinal flora once a yeast overgrowth has been brought back under control and they can also help to prevent a future relapse of candida overgrowth.

Other less well-known strains of friendly bacteria are often used in the treatment of a yeast imbalance and have the ability to compete for space with the yeast in the digestive tract thus crowding it out and slowly but surely killing it off. These types of good bacteria include the Enterococcus family and the spore-forming bacteria belonging to the Bacillus family. These spores are dormant until they reach the right environment; like a seed that only begins growing when the conditions are right (soil, sun, water). This makes these probiotics a lot more robust to withstand higher temperatures and more easily survive the harsh environment of the stomach. Because these types of bacteria also aid the other strains of good bacteria residing in the body to reestablish, they are effective in re-balancing the gut environment as well as crowding out the yeast.

Enzymes

Enzymes can assist with a candida overgrowth in a number of ways.

Digestive Enzymes are taken with each meal and can help to breakdown food entering the digestive system more effectively meaning that more is absorbed and less is available to feed the yeast cells. Many digestive enzymes also include an enzyme called cellulase which helps us to breakdown cellulose, an undigestible plant fibre, but it has also been found to assist in breaking down a component in the wall of the yeast cell called Chitin thus aiding in killing off the candida cells.

Systemic Enzymes, also known as proteolytic or protein digesting enzymes, are taken on an empty stomach so they can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, they help by circulating and then digesting the numerous toxins released by the dying candida cells which are responsible for the ‘die-off’ symptoms. They also assist the immune system indirectly by cleansing the blood so the immune system can get to more important tasks.

Digestive enzymes and systemic enzymes can be taken together as they work in different areas of the body, but they must not be taken at the same time of the day (digestive enzymes with food and systemic enzymes away from food).

So… then I don’t have to eat like a Rabbit?

The bad news is that you WILL have to take responsibility for your lifestyle and your diet, we don’t sell magic here!

The Good news is that you don’t have to eat like a rabbit. Sure some people are sensitive to certain foods – and you will know what they are , but most people will get results with a “sensible” diet , initially removing sugars and processed foods as much as possible until you get results.

Threelac, is an alternative to the “impossible” Candida Diet.
